It would be a bracket fungus. Perhaps someone will be along to tell you
which one, but if not, letting us know what species of tree the stump
belongs to may help identification.

I broke a bit off and had a sniff. Smelt of nothing ...one site said
it was inedible ... I thnk I'll just leave it eating the tree stump :)

It had crossed my mind to get some of those mushroom plug things -

It's called Dryad's Saddle or Polyporus squamosus, a very common fungus of dead tree stumps. I was rather surprised to learn it is on a living tree, and also surprised that someone thinks it edible. But wikipedia is my friend. So I learn (1) it can grow on living maples and (2) although normally listed as an edible fungus in the textbooks (not poisonous, but not usually nice to eat), but apparently some people do eat them, but you have to get them when they are very young and tender. Since they persist for a long time, they are normally encountered when they are tough and manky.

It can also grow on living walnuts. We had one with it, which we
removed (on the grounds that the tree itself was manky, probably
for that reason). But it's not a serious parasite, as it doesn't
kill a tree fast - we had an apple with it that had had it for at
least 30 years, when it finally lost so many branches as to need
removing.

It's not on a living one... the green is from the privet hedge
behind.The stump is too soft to chainsaw out so it's been left.
