Dahlias
 

Went to Ayelttes last Friday and saw their trial beds of dahlias which
were not as good as they normally are, indeed Ayletts said so on a
notice and said they wouldn't be leaving dahlias in the ground
overwinter again.
Some of the dahlias were wonderful but some were really, well, only a
mother could love them, including one scratty looking thing called Pooh
which had about 4 moth-eaten thin miserable petals to a
bloom/flowerhead.

Well worth a look though as they have the plants en masses so you can
see them, though their new grounds next door to their garden centre
aren't as extensive as the old trial grounds. Anyone can wander round

It has been a very strange year for Dahlias, some varieties have loved
the weird weather we have had, the heatwave after planting then cool
wet weather following.
Most growers have found that they have several(or more) varieties that
have remained short and made nothing like their "normal" growth.
I would say that around 50% of mine are just around knee height
instead of being 3ft plus.
The Tree dahlias and trheir offspring have loved it, with some now
heading for 9ft in height,

My dahlias have just decided to go into full bloom this week, several
weekends too late for the local gardening club show. :-(
