Monty Don in :-

writes there, as one of the supporting celebrities :---

"All waste is bad but stupid, cruel waste is particularly shameful.
We have to start caring for this world and stop throwing it away.
Discarding perfectly edible fish just to satisfy beaurocratic expediency is
stupid,
cruel and wasteful and we should stop it now. I completely support Hugh’s
campaign and hope you will too."

I have not seen it referred to here so a reminder to
please sign up to support this campaign.

Passing on the message by various means, will also help.

Yes but on the other hand if we allowed fisherman to sell ALL that they
caught isn't there a danger too that they will go out and gather
anything that swims?

Not sure how you would stop that. I just thought that allowances MIGHT
just put some stop to overfishing.

The alternative view advocated on HFW's prog was to limit the number
of days' fishing rather than the weight of a given species landed.

The system they use in Norway convinced me when I heard about iit
(last year?), but I can no longer remember how it worked -- I'm sure
brains less scattered than mine are present, though. I do remember
that dumping wasn't allowed at all: any fish caught had to be landed,
but there was some kind of penalty involved. Maybe you have to be a
Norseman to understand it!

The fishermen themselves say they should be allowed to land all they catch
but their days at sea should be limited instead. Trouble is we all know
what
people in other EU countries do about such restrictions.

You may think you do.
In The Netherlands they enforce fishery rules with the help of very big
fines.

And the Spanish with the biggest fishing fleet? Last I heard they only had
two chaps to "police" it and they are in an office in Madrid!

In the EU, everybody thinks they're the only ones who obey the rules
-- except the Mediterraneans, who don't accept the weird northern
notion that rules aren't simply an entertaining literary form you're
not actually supposed to comply with.

Isn't it the Spanish we've got to convince to fish ethically?
Weren't sand eels being scooped up by the million for power stations?
