Default Mushroom Spawn

I bought some mushroom spawn (spores?) by accident, they were on the same
peg in the shop as broad beans and I grabbed 4 packets without checking,
one of them was the mushroom.
Has anyone any experience with them? I have Googled an the process seems to
be quite involved.
Now I have them I feel the need to give them a go.

Says on the packet - Mushroom(agaricus) dry spawn.

Is there an easy way?

There should be instructions on the packet. I think you need
sterilised compost to grow them on, to avoid having any /other/ kind
of fungus sprouting.

I had a mushroom kit when I was at school that did really well (but
from a whole box kit, not just the spores), but I've had them since
and they've not worked hardly at all. I thin kthe difference is the
heat of the house and the humidity (since now I live with someone who
likes having the house very centrally heated and about 4 degrees
hotter than my parents used to!)

There are instructions on the packet but they are vague to say the least.
It mentions using straw as a growing medium.
Going to have a go though, nothing to lose.

You've got spawn, not spores. Spawn is the equivalent for mushrooms of buying onion sets rather than onion seed. I would google some detailed instructions, because you have to do it right or it doesn't work very well.

Normally people buy a "home mushroom kit" which includes a sterile growing medium, along with instructions suitable for that medium. You've just got the spawn, so you'll have to make your own sterile medium, or buy it ready made.

Yeah, I've read those instructions. :-)

*nod* The key thing is to make sure you put it somewhere slightly cool
(which is difficult in our house) but not /cold/ (so not outside!), and
don't let it dry out. Very difficult in a centrally heated house,
unfortunately. Cellar would be ideal!
