ID plant please
 

Does anybody know what this plant is? I don't think it is a phormium.

Hi Lintama, Yes its a Phormium, there are many varieties with that colouration like 'PinkPanther' etc. It has also been inside a greenhouse etc for quite a while looking at how the leaves have been drawn up ? and maybe in poor light looking at the number of plain leaves ??

Why don't you think it's a Phormium? Looks remarkably like one to me.

OK thank you Lannerman. I was told it wasn't a phormium but obviously wrongly advised. Any idea how big it will grow? What kind of light and soil does it need please?

Thank you all for the advice. I accept now that it is a phormium. I recently bought it from a plant sale and lost the tag. It probably was not getting the light it needed. I have repotted it into the clay pot although I will watch it doesn't get pot-bound. I will eventually find a place for it in the garden. I would like to know how big it will get though before planting it.
Here in Suffolk, we are having a very dry spell and it is hot this weekend. The plant isn't dry though. I have been having to use my hose on my garden this weekend so save my plants from drying up altogether.

With phormiums, I find a broad rule of thumb is, the wider and more
rigid the leaf, the taller and wider the plant will end up. Yours is one
of the arched narrow-leaf ones so probably won't get much taller or wider
than a metre.
Some of the pink-variegated ones tend to lose bright colouration and
revert to dull green or brown leaves after a few years. Since it's hard to
dig up established clumps you might want to consider that when you plant
it out.

as a clue. When we moved ours to our daughter and son in law's house, it
took three of us to pick it up and into the back of a pick up truck of the
builders who were doing some work for them

Hi Lintama, It will grow about 4ft and needs a well drained soil in full sun. We use them alot down here In Cornwall as they are incredibly salt wind tolerant.
I must add that quite a few have been killed in these last few winters and the only advice i can give you is that like alot of these plants, the drier you can keep it in winter, the more resistant to the cold it will be, so cold and dry and you have a fighting chance, cold and wet and you risk losing it.
