Runner beans, wot beans ??

As you may have guess, my runner beans have and are still flowering but
not a bean in sight. This is the first year ever I've had this problem.
What is it due to do you think? Lack of bees? as I've not seen one
bee in my garden this Summer :(

Blimey, we've had loads of bees!
My beans are behind as I put them in late, as seeds not plants. but the
ones I did as plants are dwarf beans, and I've already had 3 good meals off
them.

Could it just be that your beans are a bit behind due to the odd weather
we've been having?

I started picking 2 weeks ago. But, only from one of six plants. Curious.

Mine were late too due to the drought. Lots of beans starting to be
ready now. Just had the first meal off them the other day. We've got
lots and lots of bees though.

We've not had cold weather where I live, it's been warm and with enough
rain - courgettes are productive, my red onions I've harvested, and
tomatoes are doing well. Just the runner beans that are not doing
anything - very strange.

I'm pleased for you Pete but I would still like a suggestion as to why
my beans are not producing.?

To hot? Too dry? Just haven't got round to setting any seeds yet? (I find the first few sprays tend not to set)

*nod* Now I think of it, there seem to be a lot of flowers and no beans all
over the allotment

Granity 16-07-2011 12:22 PM

It's usually due to lack of water, even with a lack of bees there's usually enough insects to at least pollinate some of the flowers. If you've got a mist attachment for the hosepipe try giving them a good misting as it is said to help setting.
We grow ours in 3'x6"x6" troughs (6 of them) in a mixture of compost and farmyard manure and so far we've had 4 feeds and put a couple of pounds of them in the freezer.

We did have a very hot dry spell a few weeks back, perhaps that's the
reason? Maybe this year I'll just have 'late' beans? I hope I get some
especially as I well manured and fertilised the raised bed they're in
this year. Time will tell I guess.

I used the compost bin to feed my beans, and now I have beans growing out of
a potato patch. :-( I should really have dug them up as soon as they
showed, but I hate getting rid of plants.

I'll post some photos to my allotment blog later, I got nagged for not
updating since my first pea, so I went and took a lot of photos at twilight
yesterday
