A friend has just read me an article from the Sunday Telegraph main
paper which says that Carol Klein has had to close her nursery, Glebe
Cottage Plants. It says she has had a row with the landlord over a
large pile of compost. I gather the land on which the nursery stands
is only rented tthough her house and garden are owned.

ANY publicity is good publicity isn't it?

The only publicity which proved fatal, was that spoken by Ratner!!!

Look at the publicity I get, very anti is the speaker's eye, but so many
people, 'real people' know me that there is ALWAYS a flow of emails. Look at
the recent one with reference to my address and the photo of me with the
National Service (Royal Air Force) Association Ensign. Great for recruitment
to the Association. (That is the one where I was the President and people
were confused about RAFA, The Royal Air Forces Association!!!)

Henry Ford said, "Half of my advertising is a waste of money, the trouble is
I don't know which half" ..... FREE advertising and publicity is 100% no
waste!

I will of course be using it for publicity for Shanklin Theatre, but does
anybody know who the group are in this photo? Taken last night.

There are two sides to it. He claims she's left the nursery area in a
messy state with a compost heap close to his door. She claims he gave
her notice only because she criticised publicly the way he'd
'butchered' trees when pruning them. He says she said that after he'd
given her notice etc. Apparently, he bought the land from its original
owner quite recently. I believe the plan is to re-organise the garden
to incorporate the nursery into it but as neither were very big, I
wonder if she'll have to acquire more land from somewhere.

I find it very sad.

I hope it turns out to be a storm in a tea cup and that they
eventually make up

That depends. You know how vicious some people can be, even when they are
wrong, no hope of an apology even !!!

I think her best bet is to grab the publicity, make the most of it, pick
herself up, dust herself off, and start all over again. It 'is' possible, I
did it when Maggie Thatcher almost succeeded in what Hitler tried to do,
ruin our country's manufacturing capabilities. I, along with lots of other
successful businesses went to the wall, but you use that experience and turn
it round :-))

I do know that if the compost was only 20 yards from my back door and
was a permanent feature when it 'could' have been nearer to her house
and it was above my courtyard so water seeped down then I might not be
so happy either.

However you never know with the media, what is truth and what is not!

If she shifted the compost over a weekend then i don't see why it
couldn't have been shifted before?

Exactly what we asked.

The average price for average land down here is about £5900 per acre.
Ray bought 3 acres of field from the Church Commission over 14 years
ago and it cost him £27,000 because it's good land and they don't sell
cheap. I think that may be the answer to that question. I don't know
how big the plot in question is but if it's less than an acre, she's
not going to make much of a nursery, size-wise. I know she had the
nursery but it was quite small and I don't think the Beeb is
over-generous with salaries to most people who aren't Mr Ross!

Don't you believe it. Griff Rees Jones gets £2.5 million/annum for his
holiday movies etc.

With respect to all who work on them, gardening programmes don't command
very high audiences or fees, afaik!

I don't think she is poor. If she'd had the chance, she should have bought
the land herself.

But i would have thought there might have been a business enterprise
scheme or something as it would have made financial sense to safeguard
her workings and also expand the nursery/

Ah but I did say it might have been in her interest if only to safeguard
