Outside lights :-(
 

Many years ago, I put some outside lights on our arbor, and they
are falling apart (mainly corrosion). I want some SIMPLE and
compact ones about the level of 20W halogen, and preferably 12V.
The ones we have at present are 'ship-style', but I can't find
any like that any more.

Any ideas of where to look?

Not sure if they are in your area, but you could try electrical
suppliers such as TLC

Just 40 led but it gives quite a good light, I charged the batteries
when I bought it 2 1/2 years ago and never touched them since, the
light is movement activated.

I am sorry for being unclear, but clearly I was!

The arbor is right next to a building with power, and I have already
fed a 12 volt supply to it. Also, I want something like half a
dozen 20W lights, which is way above most solar lights, and
under an arbor is very shaded anyway. Most seriously, I need to
put the lights on the side of 3"x3" posts, which is the real killer.
Almost all lights are either 4+" or fancy "coach lights", and I
have no desire to pretend to run an eighteenth century brothel!

What I really want is a small, simple light fitting for attaching
to a wall (surface mounting) that takes a 12V supply. I could
sacrifice the last, but I want a number of such lights.

You just have to make sure that the solar collector is large enough,
some are pathetic,
The wife bought 2 "Hanging lanterns", I've seen better glow worms.
Try searching Google images for solar outside lighting, might give you
some ideas.

I don't know if this will answer but have you looked at fittings for
boats, most of which (iirc) run of a 12v supply and are weatherproof if
they're fitted to masts, for example?

Not in depth, but I have. Some are suitable, but they are very
pricey, and I don't need lights that can take an Atlantic gale!

Unfortunately, pricey may go with the territory, no? *You're looking
for unusual in techie terms and weatherproof, too so I imagine that
presents its own expense/availability ratio?

Google will give you some ideas. Certainly they will give several halogen
bulb suppliers, but as for the actual fittings, well(?)

No, I haven't. Thanks for the idea. Obviously interior ones are
unsuitable, but I would have no difficulty in jury rigging the
cabling.

Blagdon do outside lights, I've two, each 35Watt, they come with the transformer, a spare bulb and four different coloured filters.


They are quite effective.

I've one that illuminates my pagoda in the back corner of the garden and another that is over the waterfall of my koi pool.

I also have two lanterns I made which each have in them a recycled 12volt pool lamp. These must be nearly thirty years old. But at 12volt they aren't very bright. That's a PIR behind me giving most of the illumination.

I've other mains lights in the garden, ten of them. All the lights are all controlled by four switches behind the lounge curtains.

We don't often turn them on, as "the street lights dim and the neighbours complain."

I've two of these, they are mounted on the concrete fence posts, the transformers are in our summer house and the low voltage cables threaded through "speed fit" pipe attached to the concrete base panels
of the perimeter fence.
