Default Extra strong spiders webs this year?

The spiders needing moving before I mowed the lawn yesterday as
they've made webs all round the bushes and hedges. Some of the web
felt really tough to break though!
Either that or I was feeling particularly weak yesterday. Some pretty
big spiders too. (Orb ones I think with huge backsides!)

They'd also reclaimed across the front path (just a couple of threads)
within an hour of my son going through it this morning. Should I be
worried about how many we have round here yet?

You are not alone. There seems be an awful lot around this year and
they all seem to be competent and prolific web-builders!

I don't know what makes them but we have some box which is like a
jewellery box every morning. It's decorated with masses of 'diamond'
necklaces made of cobwebs sparkling with dew. They're not very big and
each is like a sort of little hammock. I must try to remember to take
a photo tomorrow morning because they're just so beautiful - as long as
I don't have to meet the inhabitants!

That would be lovely to see!

Picture this! Retractable clothes line. Did some washing yesterday
evening. Pulled line out of reel and attached to hook at other end of
path. Hung washing and left it out overnight to get an early drying
start. By this morning the spiders had started to get at it. I don't
know whence they came!

I've noticed round here they have blue chest bits and the big bulging
backends have little red triangles on them front and back! They're big
enough to be clearly visible from about 50 feet away.

Cheers, Jake

On the allotment this morning I spent some time watching a spider build its
web. The radial bit was in place and the spider was going round and out from
the centre. It grabbed a radial and pulled it towards itself, attached silk
from it's rear then moved on. Fascinating. I often sit and watch the bees
going round the French Marigolds. Ain't nature great?!

Take a pic (Or find one on google images)

I've had a look - the ones in our garden are mostly Orb spiders but
are particularly big this year.
I'm itching thinking about them now though (probably cos there's a pic
of some woman with a spider on her face )

I love watching bugs.
I prefer it when I can snap spiders web easily though.

No, don't worry about them, Mogga. Just think how much it will save you
on insecticide.

There do seem to be lot of orb weavers around at the moment. The ones I
see most of in my garden are Araneus diadematus and Zygiella x-notata.
Occasionally, I see the web (and inhabitant) of Meta segmentata, too.

If you do have to move the webs, try and retain the bridge line as this
makes it easier for the spider to reconstruct its web.

Hi Sacha,

I wonder if 'your' spider is Linyphia triangularis? It's web has a
random super-structure and sub-structure, being catchment/safety lines
above and below a roughly central hammock-like 'barrage' sheet, below
which the spider lives.

A photograph would certainly help.

I'm finding it very hard to place this spider atm, Jake. There is a
spider with a small reddish sub-triangular mark near the spinnerets, but
the spider is more greenish than blue. I'd love to know what it is.
Any chance of a photo, and/or a description/pic of its web?

I'll keep my tarsal tips crossed.

Can't have been, Jake. I was no where near your garden, neither do I
have a big bulging backend ;~)!

Having thought about it overnight, your spider may have been Theridion
pictum. It does have overlapping red triangles down its globose
abdomen. However, it does not have blue on its chest. Its chest is
very glossy, though, could it have reflected blue from something else?
