Just use buckets, don't waste your money. Punch a few holes in the
bottom.
Use a sand/compost mix.
You can scrat the compost off the top and pick some spuds without
uprooting the whole plant.
When you plant the spud, leave space and top up with compost mix as
the plant grows.
Don't neglect the watering.

We use metre-cubed white sacks, the type you get builders material in, they
are quite good for potatoes.

I'm goung to use plastic dustbils , drilled of course. Would you plant
potatoes in layers, say two layers or three in a bin this size?

Bill. Single layer stuff. Go to
http://www.gardenbargains.com/view-videos.htm?page=4 and click on the
video in the middle (the potato grow pod one) You can max it to full
screen display then hit Esc(ape) at the end to give you the screen
controls back. It'll give you the how to.

Cheers, Jake

I tried that once. There seemed to be no benifit. You can leave a
space on top (about a foot)and put a sheet of glass on top of the
bin. This brought them on a bit.
You can take the glass away later and gradually top up with compost/
soil.
