I was tought many years ago that it's not knowing the answer, it's
knowing where to find the answer, and by asking the right questions,
in the right place you can mostly get the answers.
It just takes time.

Years ago I was an Instructor in a GPO Telephone Engineering School in the
Midlands. Telephone Engineers would come in for 2, 3 or 4 week courses on
specific telephone systems. There was an exam at the end and they were
amazed that they could take their books into the exam. They could get all of
the answers from their books, BUT, they had to know 'where to find them'
without spending all the exam time trying to find the answer to the first
question. They had to know "WHERE" to look and to have listened and learnt
and retain 'most' of it in their head.

Now then, Mr Philosophical. Which came first, the question or the
answer? Careful ......

If you need to ask the right question in the right place, the first
pre-requisite is that you know the right place from which to get the
answer. Which pre-supposes that the answer exists in that place as
otherwise how would you know what was the right place. If it is then
accepted that you know the right place to ask the question, it must
follow that you know the right answer as otherwise how would you know
that the place was the right one to choose?

Quaere - if you know the right question and the right place to ask it,
you must, by definition, know the right answer.

Otherwise, just ask in the Isle of Wight Newsgroup and someone there
is sure to know :-}}}

But these days, with GIYF, it is a question of knowing how best to

Two people in two different cars rolling towards a cliff.

One knows which pedal is the brake. The other one doesn't, but knows
the manual is in the glovebox and the answer is in it. It takes 10
seconds to find the answer; the cliff edge is 9 seconds away...

Sometimes, of course, you /think/ that you know the answer. The brake
pedal is the one one the right, isn't it? ;-)

Let's go back a bit.

In the first place there would have been a problem of some sort - generating
a question. if that same problem had occurred for someone else then there
would be a question to be asked as to how the problem was fixed, or the
question answered.

So I think the question comes first then the answer, either solved or
offered by another person.

Knowledge for it's own sake is fine, but for the less knowledgeable, where
to find the answer is vital.

The answer will always be 42 unless you are unlucky enough to have to
do OU social sciences then it all depends on the question and there's
apparently NO right answer :)

This also correlates to the "three phone call" method....as in how many it
takes to find out anything.
Google has probably shortened that.

Ah but it could be How old do you feel ? Don't forget that No part of
your body is older than 7 years as all cells get renewed over 7 years.

Phew! Thanks Dave. I was getting worried that I was about to be
arrested as a sex offender. The OH doesn't look as young as 7 (actual

I think you'll be OK Jake as by that idea you'' be less tha 7 as well
and I don't think you can be charged with being a sex offender at that
age.
