Went yesterday.. my mum was there today though.. Oh well..

Was a LOT quieter than I remember it.. IS it me or was it not also
called the 'London' Garden show the first year... They had an extra
hall with low lighting featuring a LOT more outdoor furniture and
lanterns/ BBQ's etc.. quite an efffect as you 'entered the main hall
through this..

THis year however it was a lot smaller.. Only the great hall as show
with 1 half plnats other half the ususal 'stuff'.

I will put up some photo's soon;-).. I was particularly impressed with
the tulip specialists.. Nice timing for them after Monty Don's little
bit on Fri night..

This is the 3rd year they've had a garden show at Ally Pally. The other two
were held earlier in April.

I thought they might have been holding it later this year because previous
years were very quiet for the exhibitors...also previous years it was on
from Thursday to Sunday.

Did you buy anything Jim?

Natalie

LOL;-)... Did I?? Hold me back!-)....

Got a rather nice clematis 'Mooshine', some small Narcissi, 1 Hardy
Fuchsia 'Preston Guild' and a Rheum. Avoided replacing the tree fern..
1 because they were very expensive.. I will probably pick one up at a
future Fouroaks or something,.. 2 because they need a bit more care
than I have time for at the mo.

Now I just need to get out there and dig and plant all this stuff;-))

Re the smaller number of exhibitors.. I think it may be partly 'cos
Ally Pally is 'out of the way' compared to some other venues and
secondly due to the cost for the exhibitors.. We had a friend showing
there the 1st 2 years and for a small operation like his it isn't
cheap..

Rather out of date site but AFAIK he is still in Kent;-)

I was there today, from about 10:30 to perhaps 3:30 or 4:00, helping
out on The London Gardens Society stand.

It was supposed to be in both halls this year too, some idiot at the
Ally Pally double booked it with a major wedding.

It's under different management this year, they made a loss yesterday,
judging by the crowds there today they've lost even more today. Almost
all the traders were loosing money there and probably wont be going
back next year from what they were saying.

If only I had known before Pete, I would have definitely trundled up the
hill to put a face to the name ;-)

I was there and didn't see Pete, so I am rather sad about that. My
friend only lives about 10 mins walk from AP, so it was a pleasant walk
yesterday, even though we were disappointed with the show.

Do you know whether Pioneer Plants were there? They are the Nursery I took
you to near Letchworth.

Natalie

Didn't notice them.. Bell Bar was there though. Oddly I didn't get
hold of a list of exhibitors.. Apart from the large ones at the end of
each hall I didin't see any for taking away.

Oh! What a pity we missed you!

Yes, it would have been nice to actually meet.

We were very disappointed and were told
by the organisers that they would probably not do it again. Last year,
it was a great success, so I can't understand why this year was so badly
attended, both by punters and exhibitors.

See my other post replying to Natalie.

I am very sorry to say I did not see the London Garden Society stand and
I am even more sorry to say that I did not see you. I forgot all about
the Society in my annoyance at seeing so little for Sally's 14 quid.
(she insisted it was her turn to pay and as I had suggested we go, I
felt very embarrassed). Last year, I looked for you, knowing you would
be there, and missed you. This year, in my dotage, I forgot. I am so
sorry.

We saw the National Trust stand, as well as the Riverwood stand and a
stand for London wildlife (I forget the exact name). We saw the Big
Plant Nursery, Traders Club and Solid Soul - furniture with which I was
very impressed. We saw Hopleys Garden and Nursery and we saw the lovely
displays of flowers, to which various awards had been made, represented
by large printed cards showing their status in the show. Finally, we
saw the tree-houses, which were all very well, but what on earth do you
put underneath them?

As an extra, we saw the summer house, which, when we looked inside, was
full of ladders and other unnecessary equipment.

I purchased a pillow (of all things!) and am quite impressed with it.
Last year I bought a lean-to greenhouse (Access - nowhere to be seen
this year), a fabric wheelbarrow and various plants, as well as a
long-armed branch-lopper and other minor stuff.

Perhaps I shall see you at another show?

I'm not that suprised, we were tucked away in a corner where very few
people found us. We were next to the stand selling drift wood, but had
almost no visitors. At least we didn't have to pay for the stand, the
society provided the judges for the show, so got our space for free
:-)

I first read this as Solid Fuel - furniture ;-) quite useful if you
get an urge to have a BBQ without preplanning:-))

I got 4 pounds of very nice sausages and a tiny little Cycad that only
cost 3 quid.

Well I'm going to Chelsea on the wednesday, and I usually go to the
RHS shows at Vincent Square, though the next one isn't until September
or October.
