Beetroot
 

I've given up on them. I'd sowed them three times, wondering if the seed
was bad, so my bro sowed a new packet from a different seed merchant on the
allotment and also at his home.
His home beetroots are up an inch, no sign of them on the lottie.
I think they might have been washed out by the rain.

Cold and damp. I have some growing but germination has been very poor.

Mine on the allotment don't seem to have done much.
The backup ones for filling in gaps are doing O.K. in a pot at home but
possibly too large to transplant now and could well grow to full size in the
pot.
Not a good year all round.

You'll have more success if you sow them in seed trays and plant them out later.

Could be slugs. They are very good at nibbling the first emerging soft shoots so that by the morning you are unaware that anything grew, and are left with the impression of non-germination.

Give it another go, the weather is just so right now.
I keep thinking about giving up this year, but when I see allotment
gardeners sowing seeds of carrot, turnip and brasses, I get all excited
again. One last try from me, and I have said it before a few times I know.
A final attempt.Futile attempt? Possibly, but you never know!
A quid or 2 and a bit of work, who knows, you could be showing beetroot at
an exhibition near you.

I think I won't bother with it this year. I planted some land cress instead
(first time trying it) and it's showing.
I hope this bad year will not put my brother off as it's his first time
growing vegs - he's 15 years younger than me and has to do all the heavy
work.
He's really gone for it despite having a 60/hr week job and 3 young
children, he got himself a greenhouse at home to grow the plants, it would
be such a pity if this unusual weather this year has put him off.
We've put a lot of work into this new plot, some crops destroyed by the hail
and others just not doing well.

Is it Flea Beetle? Seems rife this year and if there is any Rapeseed growing
near you it certainly will be around. Last time I tried with Beet root they
came up into a thin green line and the next day, all gone.

Not a good start to your brothers vegetable gardening career this rotten
year, but it seems that he has taken to it.
Next year when (hopefully) the weather is normal, he will be even more
eager. It's a pity for him that in his first year the weather has been so
bad. And you too with your huge project.

Surely I cannot have Flea Beetle as well as pea and bean weevil! I agree
the pea damage I had was typical of pea & bean weevils.
No veggies have been grown here before and there isn't any rape within a
couple of miles.
How can these pests find me already?
