OT XP DVD player?
Sorry not a gardening thing but I trust gardeners more than Google . I
have a laptop but it has XP on it but windows media player can't play DVD's on it as it doesn't have one installed. Now I know I can get a free compatible DVD player from somewhere but who to trust to download it? Any suggestions please? -- Janet Tweedy |

A bit of DVD player software or a physical DVD drive in the laptop. I don't think we have perfected downloading hardware yet. -- Cheers Dave. |

ALDI do cheap reasonable external DVD players (rewriters) or you could buy one from Maplin, Amazon, Dabs or PCW. They are all much of a muchness now - a few complete dogs but look for 4 or 5 * reviews. Maplin has Samsung ext slimline on offer for £35 at the moment. For playback the cheapest one will do - you might better off with one that has buffer underrun protection if you intend to burn DVDs. There is something odd going on. XP should be able to do this and VLC definitely will run on XP and it will play most types of video file. You might perhaps have to download a codec for a really obscure format. Sorry couldn't think of another word for DVD player software, don't need hardware :) I think you have some sort of config error that is preventing DVD decoders from working on your PC. You should in extremis be able to nagivate around the disk in EXplorer and double click on the large MPEG files and let the OS go and find the right reader. The only other thing I can think of is that you have region locked content on the disk and a mismatched player region. -- Regards, Martin Brown |
