Well That's it

Following Sat nights frost, a garden inspection between the
showers this morning reveals:

Dahlias, Hydrangeas & Virginia Creeper blackenen and soorwful
Fuchias just looking a bit sad
French Beans (what there was), sweet corn dead
Runner beans just about still alive, but rather sad
Lettuce (outside) still looks OK
Leeks & winter green vegies fine
Carrots, swede & turnip fine, just need to stop the slugs
burrowing in!

You have done well I think from this awful year.
I have had next to nothing this year because of flooding.
I wish I knew how to grow swede properly. Mine have always been small and
like a carrot in shape, not cylindrical(if thats the right word) Have you
any tips for me?
I don't know of anyone who has had the slightest cob of sweetcorn this year
localy. Just a bad year I suppose.

I bought some local cobs a few days ago at Riverford Farm shop. They
were excellent. But two local farmers have told us that they can't get
onto the fields to plant or drill for winter wheat. It's a nightmare
for them that could become one for everyone else.

I got a decent crop, which I wasn't expecting.

Nick Maclaren.

Well that is a lesson for us all.
Never say never. Bit of a cliche these days but I can't think of a better
one.

My swedes are never brilliant, but do swell up to tennis ball
size, or a bit bigger. I think one of the secrets is do not plant
the seed thickly and then thin out, they seem to hate disturbance
of any sort. As they grow mostly on the surface, I never plant the
seed very deeply either.

Who said I had any cob's off the sweet corn! Well to be honest I
did pull a couple off at the weekend before the frost, only 3/4
set and not very swollen. Frost finished off the plants.
