After such a crappy year ...

After my year of diasterous no-beans and no-courgettes, I'm actually
(touch wood!) getting an astoundingly good crop of brassicas, chard
and leeks! For the first time ever I've got /4/ good heads of broccoli
on the go! Although in the past I've had a problem with timing and
not picking at the right time - I am aware that I am meant to cut the
main head and then mini heads grow off the side, but I have to time
cutting them so that they are big enough but also not starting to
flower! There is curly kale and cavolo nero that looks read to start
picking at. The cauliflowers and romanesco and sprouts are not so
happy looking, but they never are ... and I have a bed of swedes for
the first time ever, which I have no idea what they're like under the
soil, but they look good on top!
The chard is like a forest! And Nick's mum has /just/ decided that
chard is the new superfood, so I've got a bag ready to send her (which
is 3 plants, and removing them caused absolutely no dent in the forest!).
The leeks are leeking about all over the place ...
And we still have raspberries and the occasional strawberry coming and
some stragglers on the redcurrants that are still worth eating.
(and the rhubarb that we didn't pick this year cos it was first year
since splitting seems to think it is spring ... not sure how bad this
is going to be for it, but we'll see in Feb!)
