Laying a lawn in November???

Hi Guys.
I'm a TOTAL newbie with my 1st ever lawn - It's a mess (even I know that).
A local gardener is offering to lay new turf, cheap, while business is quiet - BUT - is laying a lawn in November a good idea? I naively think it should be done in spring, otherwise the grass will die. Am I right?

If you have something resembling a lawn I would get a lawn specialist such
as Green Thumb to 'fix' it. Much easier and much, much cheaper than new
turf.
Something else which is so easy, is to learn how to use newsgroups and not
the shitty Gardenbanter.

uk.rec.gardening (is where we are at)

My new house has a huge lawn. Part of it was bald when we moved in.
The gardener used one of those "aerating" rollers and then seeded it.
It is looking better already.

You don't say where you are, If the weather stays mild, and you are in
an area that doesn't get high rainfall so that the ground is workable,
and is not a bog, then it is possible.
If the grass is going to go down and no one is going to be walking on it
or running about on it so that is left alone to root when the weather is
right then it would be OK.
It would take some very hard weather to kill of good turf, the biggest
problem would be heavy snow lying on it for a few weeks.

Actually spring isn't necessarily the most clever time to relay/reseed lawn, because it is often rather dry, though a damp spring is ideal. But at least it won't require watering as often as in summer. But if you are willing to water it regularly, then summer can be better because it will establish faster in the warmer weather. If you are less willing to water it, then autumn can be the best time because it is wetter than spring. If reseeding, by November it is likely too cold to get germination, need to wait to April.

Just laying turves down without preparing the ground is a waste of time, the turves die unless their roots can penetrate into the lower ground, which requires it to be nicely soft tilth. Plenty of sand in the soil is good for lawns to make the soil light, and because grasses actually needs sand as a nutrient. Once you've prepared the ground nicely, you may as well reseed instead of turves, much cheaper.
