Gardening talks
For those of you who belong to gardening groups - where do you find
people to give talks? And what talks have you had that were good? (Or bad!) I do think someone to give a talk on all the things you can grow over winter might be nice. -- http://www.voucherfreebies.co.uk |

I do illustrated talks to various groups on various subjects and most are by recommendation because someone in the audience belongs to another group as well. A talk I gave on Monday about food rationing during the second world war brought a further booking there on another subject, (already done one before), and two enquiries from other groups. They are good fun also. The courses are as long or as short as you need them, depending how deep into the chosen subject you want to go. The shorter courses of 1 or 2 sessions are really just talks. You can 'phone your local council and ask about adult learning and they will send you a leaflet with available courses. The short courses I have been to, have lead me to some fantastic people who share my passions. Baz |

All invited paid £10 per ticket and had a glass of wine and some nibbles (which were donated, I think) and all who wanted to ask a question were asked to write them down and send them in, in advance which is what happens on the real GQT, I think. Anyhow, it was fun, gave a lot of people innocent amusement and serious information and raised over £1k by the time ticket money and raffle money were put together. Just a thought for Mogga or anyone else who's thinking of a gardening-themed event for like-minded people. Oo that sounds fun! Thanks! They used to send speakers to do a very interesting presentation on wild flowers, the problems they face, their uses, successes in bringing species "back from the brink" and so on. They had speakers in most areas of the country and covered travel expenses themselves. We try to get people who also bring plants to sell as this is always an attraction. Can tell you we have had some dire talkers but several good ones 2013 we have Helen Yemm and also Fergus Garrett. FG is good and entertaining as we have had him before Val Bourne is very good and Aubrey Barker from Hopleys plants (he brings plants with him) Also Bob Brown (he brings plants) and or course Timothy West from Oxford Botanic. Andy Sturgeon was surprisingly good and Edwin um, well Edwin from Wendover who won Gardener of the Year sometime ago. There's a really interesting and exceptionally good speaker from St Albans way, a vicar i think who talks about orchids and can hold my interest even if it was all about orchids!! Mind you, you have to take into account cost and things like travelling expenses and so on. I can't tell you here the dire speakers but they include some people who are rated very good gardeners !! Ray Broughton from Southsea area is phenomenally knowledgeable with lots of interesting snippets and so on. All depends on where you are and what level you want the talk aimed at. Some of the speakers at the Hardy Plant Society are really good but a bit 'in depth' for our local members as a whole. Any more? -- Janet Tweedy |
