Always order my fragrant sweet peas from Matthewman but thought I might
give someone else a whirl. Any recommendations? Don't care about
appearance scent is priority. I know some nurseries that are potting on
seedlings this week already!!

As an experiment I sowed mine at the beginning of October. Now I'm
wondering what on earth I'm going to do with them if they carry on
growing at the same rate. I'm guessing they'll slow up (and probably
die) when the weather gets colder

Thanks Spider i do usually order quite a few including Matucana (sold by
Sutton's as Cupani) but wondered if there were other specialists in the
old fashioned fragrant ones rather than the Spencer ones.

I get mine from T&M and Chiltern, both of which, if I recall correctly, have quite a few "heritage" sweet peas, although, obviously, they're not specialists.

To scent your sweet pea seed, just spray them with your favourite
scent. Oh, you meant seeds that grow into scented sweet peas?

My experience is similar to other people's - most of the ones
described as highly scented aren't, but old fashioned ones are,
and L. matucana definitely is.

Nick Maclaren.

I found seeking out the specialists gave you more choice and some lovely
flowers.

These people seem to specialise, Janet. Any good?

L. matucana is by far the most highly scented, ime. Its only snag is
the very short stems. I find it amazing to think that Americans are
sacrificing the scent in favour of going for highly spectacular blooms.

Yes, but the scent of L. matucana is a little rank compared to the
old fashioned varieties. Not everyone likes it.

Nick Maclaren.

Ooh yes thanks Spider. They have Janette Scott , though I always
wondered if the breeder of those also did cucumbers as his name was W.

I've visited the Burpee farm in Pennsylvania - and IIRC, they _do_ breed
cucumbers...

Yes I buy lots of salad mixtures from them plus stuff I can't get
elsewhere. If not i buy from a German Firm that has since moved to The
canarie Isles!

I like going to a specialists as you get a better description and they
rank scent better . Nicky's and other places would just say fragrant,
but the specialists really know which ones have the most powerful scent
!

Think I did try that but couldn't get it to germinate some years ago.
Might give it another go now you've reminded me, thanks David.
