I don't know what to say because it's so obvious. Apart from find a farm as
near as you can and ask them for some.
If you have a riding stables near you you could try there.

You could find an allotment group and ask who they use.

Google on 'livestock farms in Stockton'. You will get a map with flags
and a list of addresses with telephone numbers. A call first will save
you a wasted journey.

Same applies to stables and, perhaps, petting farms.

Not sure googling on Stockton would help. OP is in Stockport.
Quite a different place.

Freecycle is a brilly place to start.
I have had to start bedding our pony on wood shavings as I could not get
small bales of decent straw. It did cross my mind that no one would want
want my muck heap but find a wood shavings muckheap is just as popular as
straw.

That's desperation.

Nothing desperate about it, better to use clean dust free wood shavings than
poor straw any time.

It's a long time since I was into horses but don't a lot of people use
wood shavings now? I can't think why they wouldn't be as popular. It
all rots down the same way. ;-)

yes lots of people use wood shaving now for the same reason as I do and as
you say it rots down just the same :-)

One of my daughters used to breed and show Arabs and she used wood shavings
sometimes. Great stuff, it does break down quicker :-)

One reason that springs to mind is that is that in some cases preservatives
are added to the timber, such as Tanalising which contains 'Tanalith E'.
You don't want that in your stable! Copper, Chrome and Arsenic are in that
chemical compound.
It might rot down harmlessly, I don't know.
Just a warning of what MIGHT be in those 'shavings' or sawdust.(the sawdust
will contaminate the shavings)

Make your own mind up about it.(dig deep)
