abutilon roots

I've noticed my 3-4 year old abutilons now have an exposed 3" section of
gnarled roots on the surface, almost as if they're trying to climb out
of the compost. They are quite healthy looking otherwise so I don't know
whether to put more soil in the pots or leave them alone. Any thoughts
appreciated

Sounds to me as if it's begging to be re potted.

I don't think so, but I might turn them out and take a look.
