In Leeds, very slow start to butterfly season - in fact saw only two butterflies in the first two weeks of the hot weather. Now masses of whites small, with a few large and green-veined. Scattering of small tortoiseshells and peacocks. And earlier we were getting ringlets for the first time ever.
Good lot of bumblebees, partly as a result of a huge black knapweed (the form with the extra ray florets) which self seeded on the upper terrace where we have our coffee and lunch. Not only are they there in abundance, but they're very easy to capture and identify.
