Swallows

Yesterday as I was resting and watching the dahlias grow as the water
was on them a swarm of Swallows passed overhead, I've never seen so many
in all the years I have been here.
I would estimate 50 or 60 but not the best bird to count.
The strange thing is they were heading North East.
Do they know something we don't?
today there was a small flight of 6 or 7 also heading in the same direction.

Is it that odd? Maybe they don't like crossing large bits of open
water so head off towards England before Kent and the shortest
crossing of the English Channel that they have no choice but to make.

A lot of birds that migrate Europe to/from Africa avoid crossing the
Mediterranean but stick to land going round the eastern end or cross
at the straights of Gibraltar.

We had a lot round here again yesterday, feeding and perching on
telephone wires. I can't say I noticed them go off in any particular
direction but they're definitely gathering.
