It isn't accurate. It's hysterical scaremongering.

We've had this discussion before on urg.

The previous thread is called Haveyou heard about this, started May
12th.

I quote my post to it:

http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/health_consu...oposal_aphp_en.
pdf

Page 16, para 27,

"Plant reproductive material which is made available on the market
only in limited quantities by small producers (niche market
plant reproductive material) should be
exempted from the requirement of belonging to a registered variety. That
derogation is necessary to prevent undue constraints to the making
available on the market of plant reproductive material, which is of
lesser commercial interest, but is important for the
maintenance of genetic diversity. "

That statement appears to exclude Heritage seeds (and small
producers/traders in Heritage seeds) from the need to register
varieties.

Paras 36 and 37 also appear to derogate Heritage material

Plus, there will be no restriction or registration requirement on non-
commercial exchanges of seed between private individuals

.................................................. .

Like the vast majority of these e-petitions. Rarely has the person
drawing up the petition statement full researched the subject or
proposal they are objecting about. They tend to be knee jerks after a
"conversation in the pub".

Exactly. See Janet's reply.

I don't see any reply - perhaps there is a Janet in my kill file?
ISTR problems with one poster called Janet.

So does anyone know if this is a real issue - will we see heritage
varieties disappear from seed suppliers and plant breeders?

Cheers

This wont apply to heritage and small seed raisers, just to the large
commercial seed houses

I suggest you check your kill file and remove Janet's name from it if
it's there.

Thanks - drifting of topic a bit but was there a problem with two Janets,
one of whom was offensive, and possibly both posting from the same
identity?

If so, has this been resolved?

Cheers

For what it's worth: when I attended the Seed Saver's Exchange summer
gathering in Iowa (I know; across the pond and a lot of land as well), one
of the speakers said that the E.U. group working on standardizing plants
had loosened its grip quite a bit, to allow the variation of landraces as
well as to make it clear that heirloom seed loonies (my term) could do as
they wished, including trading amongst themselves, even if money changes
hands.
Now, you may well argue that the real concern is whether there should be
any regulation at all, but that's another bag of genes.
Personally, I'm more concerned about the very small number of very large
companies who have dominion over our food supplies.
See also, "Fahrenheit 451."
I'm an heirloom rutabaga and a foliage turnip probably not found elsewhere
(It was in the East German seed bank and seems to have disappeared from
listings.)

The colonial will be quiet now...;

We did have a troll here who assumed the identities of several of the
regular posters, but was easily spotted from the headers. I don't recall
'Janet' as being one of the troll's aliases, but anyway he/she seems to
have gone away now.

Ta - after some digging in the innards of Pan I found out how to remove an
'ignore' entry.
