Default Vitopod propagator

I just recieved the vitopod today but I'm so dissapointed, it will not heat. has anyone come across this problem. The thermostat is reading and I can set it so it means there is power coming to it.

Place the propagator in a cool & shady place. Put a small pile of sand
or compost in it. Put a thermometer in the pile. Take a reading. Turn
the propagator on, set the thermostat to max, and take a reading from
the thermometer at least an hour later.

If they are the same, then it's likely the propagator heater is not
working. If the second reading is several degrees higher than the
first, it is working.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for replying, I'm judging it against the Big Jumbo which I have. I set it at 24oC last night, checked it this morning, still read 24 but when I placed my hand on it, it was not warm. We brought it into the house just an hour ago put it in a dark cool room, set it at 30oC. It got mildly warm but again I think not hot enough. Correct me if I'm wrong

Have you got another thermometer you could check it against? One of those liquid crystal ones would be good because it would hold close to the heating panel, otherwise any thermometer, but keep the lid on the propagator, otherwise heat loss to the air will mean that the temperature you read will be less than the temperature that would be experienced by the plants.

Are you certain it's not heating? I ask, because propagators in
general are fairly low power, and only need to supply low levels of
heat, just enough to warm the soil by a few degrees above ambient, so
it may not be immediately obvious that it's working. They don't get
hot like a radiator or electric fire!

I presume this is outside in a greenhouse/shed/whatever, in which case
if it's holding 24C overnight, it suggests it's working.

But how warm is 'mildly warm'? Probably 30C. You really need to check
it with a thermometer, as Kay says.

Put a tray of damp compost in the thing, leave it for 12 hours and
measure the temp underneath the tray

Thank you all so much for helping. I did indeed put a tray of damp compost into it plus a thermometer and it is recording perfectly. It seems it needed to be put on full temperature for a few hours before it heated properly. Now at 20oC I can find what I call proper heat. Thank you all again.
