Earlier this year you knowledgeable people helped me out with the moss on my
front lawn. Thanks to your advice I now have a really smart looking lawn and
have been complimented.
I understand that the moss is down to poor drainage, will doubtless return
and that spiking the lawn helps.
Question one: If I spike the lawn with my pitch fork regularly will this
sort of prevent most of the moss returning? I can live with a bit.
Question two: When would be the best time to start doing this?
I used Evergreen Complete 4 in 1 last time, it made a terrible mess.

You need to scarify your lawn by vigorously raking and dragging dead
material from the all over the surface. It will look a bugger after this,
and it needs to be done every year. But don't worry.
Then you have to to aerate (spike) your lawn every 20cm (8") and as deep as
you can.
After this is the time to use your fertiliser with a few new seeds. Scrub
it in if you can with a coarse yard brush.
Your lawn will look like the Welsh forwards have practiced, but no worries,
they are good at mending a weak twine.

Improving the drainage by spiking at any time will help, and I should
think that now would be as good a time as any, before the winter wet
really sets in. Whatever spiking implement you use, make sure you
drive it well into the soil and wiggle it a bit to open up the hole; I
use an ordinary garden fork driven in at least 6 inches. Lightly
pricking the surface is a waste of time. If you can brush some coarse
sharp sand over the area afterwards to fill the holes, so much the
better.

What do you mean by 'a terrible mess' when you used Evergreen
Complete? Did the lawn all go black? If it did, that's the moss being
killed off by the sulphate of iron (ferrous sulphate) in the EC. It's
what it does.

Yeah, the lawn went black. The wife blamed me for it :-(

Crikey no! Do it _properly_ and one go should see it OK for a year or
three, but I suppose it does rather depend on individual
circumstances.

I seem to have very little moss. I more or less spiked it to death months
ago.
I'll give it a good spiking after the last mow of the year, which is coming
very soon I suspect.
One bloke said to me that I have the best lawn in the street :-)))
