No. Ray shelled them and the actual nut is white!

We had a large walnut tree in our garden, when I was child. It's
removing the green outer layer that covers the shell that turns
fingers brown.

I'll get Ray to hold his hands out for inspection! ;-)

Come to think of it, I have a neighbour who beats his dogs. His wife
left him recently, but he does have walnuts. So there you are!

While you are checking that his finger nails are clean :-)

Plus the back of his ears and that he has a clean hanky! ;-) Last time
he went for a hair cut, it was so long that I told him to get an
estimate!

Hi Sacha,

Fresh walnuts are nothing like dried, delicious indeed!

How long did it take your tree to start fruiting? We've planted 2 over
the years, the first only has a few after 20 years. (In fairness it was
nibbled nearly to the graft by deer shortly after planting. My fault.)

I'll have to check when this one went in, if any of us can remember.
It's probably about 15' or so tall though. It had about a dozen nuts
on it last year so it's definitely improving. Like you, my parents
found that one they planted took a long time to fruit and I think
that's pretty normal. If anyone remembers about ours, I'll post it.

Ray has hunted his memory and thinks between 15 and 16 years ago, maybe
a very little longer. At first, he gave his stock answer of 'about 10
years' and when I said 'so since we were married?', he said 'Oh! No.'
We were married 13 years ago! As I said earlier, he remarked that it
only a few nuts two years ago, a few more last year and quite a lot
more this year. I'm afraid we have no idea if there's anything special
about the variety, but I will say that it's on fertile soil that gets
very wet very quickly!

Thanks (and to Ray), I think it must have something to do with the poor
soil here. Prhaps I'll give ours a good feed of powdered seaweed this
winter.
