Default It's a rough old day.

Here overlooking Swansea Bay it's been a rough old day, strong gusts of
wind all day but stronger this afternoon and evening the wind has been
gusting to over 60mph for the last 5 hours with 63mph, 72, 75, 66. 68
and just in the last hour 81mph.
Swansea and Cardiff must be glad that their match is tomorrow.

Can't measure wind speed here - gusts that were strong enough to force
the tops of trees almost horizontal blew one sufficiently over to
knock the weather station off its mounting. So far, everything else
seems to be standing here though there's a lot of damage in Bridgend
(Princess of Wales Hospital roof damaged, a number of trees blown
down) and, I'm told, further east towards Cardiff. Haven't checked
things to the west yet.

We've had a lot of gusty wind today, though I can't tell you the wind
speed as the machine got broken last time. It's much quieter tonight
and there's been a few savage showers of rain during the day but not
many and not for long.

It looks as if the Mumbles recorded the strongest winds along the south
coast of Wales, The last hour has seen the gusts down to 71 mph.

I did see you quoting an 81 mph gust but the official stats record the
highest gust at 84 mph.

In 22 years of living here, I've never seen gusts like today. Whilst
Leylandii stood bolt upright as they do, 20 foot multi-trunked
conifers were turning horizontal at about the 6 foot point. I'm
surprised none snapped off. I did lose some branches from the
whitebeam (which lost all its leaves by the end of September) but
other trees still in leaf stood up to the onslaught save for a large
part of a hornbeam which I'll have to tackle tomorrow if the wind
reduces. It was that which took out my weather station - some 3-4
metres away. It's returned sort of upright but I can see the split in
the branch.

I'm not checking anything till tomorrow, but 8 hours with the wind
gusting to 63mph and over makes last weeks "Storm" look pathetic.

Very wise, gusts to 60+ indiacte sustained speeds around 50. At that
level of wind you have to lean so far into it that your center of
gravity can easyly be outside your base area, wind drops you fall
over. Or if you fill like a bit of fun, jump up and land 18" down
wind...

... makes last weeks "Storm" look pathetic.

Quite, I don't see the media hype around this storm that accompanied
last weeks one. Looks to be similar levels of damage, trees down,
power failures, rail disruption, etc.

Was in Hull today, pretty blowy occasional very heavy showers.

The AWS for here (1400' on the North Pennines) has clicked up another
inch of rain, but only just F7 gusting to mid 30's. I think we had
the low track more or less over us so too close for the really strong
winds, pressure down to 981 around 1900.

Radio 4 weather this morning said that it had gusted to 91mph at the
mumbles yesterday.
Today the weather pussy cat is purring gently, the sun is out, fluffy
white clouds and a nice breeze.
What a change.

Knocks the "headline" 80 or what ever of the needles into a cocked
hat..

The anemometer is saying only F3/F4 wind chill is 0 to -5 C.
Generally overcast, with a few holes, brightish. The wind chill makes
it unpleasant out.

What a change.

It's what makes this an interesting nice place to live. When I was
travelling around the world I couldn't really handle the non-changing
day lengths and thunderstorm at 1600 every day, boring. B-)

Covered one of those last centaury when the Cardiff fans had been
completely banned. Cardiff scored all you heard was the swish of the
ball down the back of the net and the keepers oath "F*****g s**t".
Apparently took them quite a while in the edit to remove the F word
before broadcast. B-)

Hello All

VERY BIG SNIP

gusting to 63mph and over makes last weeks "Storm" look pathetic.

Last week's storm was anything but pathetic for those of us who live on the
30 mile wide corridor of peak activity. There were trees down all over the
strip, and some people did not get their electricity back for 5 days because
the local damage was so extensive. I live in Suffolk and lost a large piece
of the large Ash tree in my garden. Some dahlias in the more exposed part of
my garden were broken off at ground level, and a lot of other plants look
distinctly shook up.

It is interesting how varied the weather can be in such a small country.

Quiet up here. Calm, clear and sharp ground frost. Min air temp -0.3
C so first air frost of the winter. Almost had to scrape the
windscreen at 0530 Saturday morning but the wipers got it clear in a
few paases.
