I plan to buy a 8 by 20 greenhouse this year, to keep the view from
the house, it would look better if the greenhouse was erected South to
North, how much dif fence will it make, rather than the conventional
East to West.

The most important thing to remember is not to erect it so that you are
dependant on light coming from the direction of neighbours. One of my
neighbours did that and new neighbours on his southern fence promptly
planted a Leylandii hedge and let it grow until he could only grow ferns in
his greenhouse.

You haven't given enough site info for anyone to advise.
For instance, alignment would make little difference if the site was
constantly shaded by trees or tall buildings.

Well I was waiting for some advice before planning the exact location.
I take the point about the neighbours trees (but I do like ferns) at
the moment its a fairly blank canvas, about a third of an acre, no
large trees, but a stunning view I would wish to keep, if possible.

My 10 x 16 greenhouse is N to S. Light levels are far more affected by the vegetation around. I concentrate on keeping the roof as clear of vegetation as possible, and the S end. I suppose it depends on what you're planning to use it for - mine is cacti, plus tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers in the summer and overwintering geraniums etc in winter.

There are so many factors governing how successful you are, so have one sub-optimal factor won't feature large in the overall scheme of things - especially as by having a large greenhouse you've given yourself an advantage in stability of temperatures.

IMO a stunning, uninterrupted view is a priceless asset both for your
own daily pleasure as long as you live there, and the future value of
your property if you ever sell.

Well let's see.
If you site the glasshouse N S then you make more use of the morning and
evening sun but less of the midday sun. OK in the simmer but in the
winter when the extra sun would help , not so good.
If you are going to erect it on a concrete block base then think about
leaving space to bring in Water pipe, gas pipe remember electric if you
are bringing it in underground.
Buy extra vents, normally with a 20 ft house you will get 4 vents. A
door at each end can be useful.
Where is the rain water going to go? do you need to put in some form of
drainage or water storage tanks.remember they can shade the house.
If you are going to have electric in the greenhouse then you will have
to put in a plate to mount the power point on also how are you going to
put in lighting?
You say you have a good view, that may mean that you will have strong
winds. I'd add extra braces at the gables and ridge.
I have just finished putting up two 8' x 10' houses which I joined to
form a 8' x 20' house thus getting 2 doors, also a 2nd hand 8' x 12'
house(Different make so different height).
I added extra braces at every glazing bar, made it much slower and
harder putting in bubble insulation, I used 5 x 25m of tape to re-stick
the cut sheets.

David@ a surprisingly rain free side of Swansea Bay, well up to an hour
ago but we did have almost 8 hours rain free and even some sunshine.

Did you leave the uprights and cross bars at the joined ends? How did
you strengthen the greenhouse at the middle, as (I assume) there is no
glazing to add strength at that position?

In my view if there is good light it makes little or no difference for 9
months of the year, You will probably end up shading it anyway half the
time, its more important it does not spoil the rest of the garden.
