I was shocked

Watching the latest Gardeners World I was shocked to see Monty pulling
out his old cabbage and throwing them away "As they are running up to seed".
This id just the time to cut the tops out to use as greens, very rapid
growth gives very tender greens and even flower shoots with some flowers
open can be used, then a couple of weeks later you will have another
crop of "Side shoots" that can be harvested and eaten.
They beat hell out of Spring greens or "Collards" and they cost you nothing.
He'll be saying next that he chops off all the young nettle shoots and
dumps them.

I did that with my cavallero nero. Not as good as purple sprouting,
but very acceptable. You can do it with ANY of the brassica, but
some are better than others. Only the ones that rot from the centre
are useless.

The Chinese grow special varieties to eat as the flowers open.
