Don't know, neither does my gardener of over 50 years, but both of us say
'Looks like a weed'

Clematis vitalba, more commonly known as Old Man's Beard or Travellers
Joy. A common climber in UK woodlands and hedgerows. The flower heads
become very fluffy with age as the seeds set, hence the name OMB.

See http://gallery.nen.gov.uk/asset63070-.html and for seed heads,

Gardening in West Cornwall overlooking the sea.
Mild, but very exposed to salt gales

Thanks Chris, recognise it now and the funny thing is that I was introduced
to Old Man's Beard in, of all places, Devon!! I was evacuated to Devon
during the War and spent a holiday there in the very early 1950's :-)

Thanks Chris. I took seeds last winter and they are growing well here in Caithness - touch wood!

Wild clematis which produces those pretty fluffy seed heads. We have
some in the garden here and we let a bit survive here and there. I
rather like it.
