Leaves look very like Gardenia, and there are yellow flowered
forms - the flower opening white and then turning yellow.
But as a border plant? Where does the friend live?

Oenothera macrocarpa?

Probably an Oenothera (there's not enough contrast in the flowers for me
to make out the relevant details), and macrocarpa/missouriensis was the
best match I found on a cursory google.
