Default Ventnor Botanic Gardens

VENTNOR Botanic Garden has underlined its tropical credentials by creating a
new type of giant water lily.

The, as yet unnamed, hybrid cultivar is entirely new, as one of its parents
had a unique flower colouring.

The Isle of Wight garden has hosted a series of midnight tours and private
viewings by garden curator Chris Kidd, who propagated, hybridised and grew
it.

Midnight tours were only being confirmed on the afternoon they were taking
place because of the unpredictable nature of the waterlily’s flowering
cycle.

Each individual flower only opens twice, so visitors, who had registered in
advance, had to wait for a late call to join a tour that night.
