Millions of small insects

Hi,

Today I noticed two patches in two different walls. I thought it was some dirty water splashing from the rain, but in a closer look I realise that it was millions of tiny insects.

Any idea of what this is?

Mmmm ... did you see them move? If so, how do they move? What do they
most look like. It's almost impossible to identify anything from those
pics. Can you get a macro shot?

Probably some kind of mite. Last time I found some odd looking ones
attacking my snowdrops I was told that the only way to identify them
reliably was by electron microscopy of the mouthparts!

Well, I've got a microscope, tho' not the appropriate lens (mine are for
spiders, of course) ... or the micro critters. Ah well.
