Zebra lost its stripes
 

I planted a clump of Miscanthus Sinensis Zebrinus (Zebra Grass) last year
and it seemed to do OK. It was cut back in late winter (as recommended) and
has now started growing back happily - only trouble is that it doesn't have
any of its characteristic stripes. I was wondering if anybody might know
the reason for this? Perhaps the soil may be missing some nutrients?

Yep I agree with Paul. I wish I had known about this newsgroup when mine
'did' the same as yours. I thought that it was the variegation reverting so
I cut off all the just green bits *doh* and guess what, no grass for that
year. I complained to the nursery who told me about the stripes coming
later and it's done well in subsequent years :-)

I like the stand in winter (rustling away and looking half alive)
and this year contemplated not cutting it back at all. I see the
straight species sinensis grows to 3 meters and I remember at the
garden Centre where I got mine, a stand of it roped back in - somewhat
shady? - conditions - which was statuesque almost to bamboo standards.
My companions didn't believe it was the same plant as the one I had
clutched under my arm.

Mine's only a small stand, so I was able to carefully clip out the old
shoots a week or two ago. :))
