Auto watering of hanging baskets
 

We have some 16" baskets each containing 21 Bacopa Gulliver in JI
number 3. This year I would like to try auto watering them. I have a
handy water supply which can easily be automated to make life easier.
Grateful for any recommendations as to the most effective type of
nozzle to use - spray, mist, drip or into watering spikes.

And make - go on Amazon and compare the feedback of the major makes.

I got the impression Gardena seems better rated than Hozelock.

Using a timer controlled system, 2-3 drippers in a basket would be fine
I guess. However, I never found a way to get enough water in them
without having lots just drain out all the time (which is not a big
deal) - or alternatively, not enough and then getting dry in hot weather

I like the Tropf Blumat watering system. It has a ceramic cone shape
that pushes into the soil, this sense the dampness of the soil and lets
through water when necessary. it is relatively expensive per container,
but doesn't require a timer.

I've given up on Hozelock water computers. Every one I've owned has
leaked internally within 2 seasons and either corroded part of the
electronics circuit board and/or battery connections. This is despite
removing the unit during the winter so water doesn't freeze inside.

I've found that a very cheap watering computer works, and lasts, just as
long as the more expensive branded products

I just use a micro tube system with adjustable drip ends touching the
soil. Being able to adjust the individual drip rate helps with balancing
a micro-tube the system. Water takes the path of least resistance and so
you have to choke off drip outlets closest to the tap.

Recommendations:
Smear grease or Vaseline around the battery terminals to give them some
degree of protections if they get wet.

When assembling a micro tube system dip the end of the tube into near
boiling water to make the tube soft before attempting to push the tube
over the couplings or drip end fittings.

You will have to adjust the watering computer timing around 3 times
during the season. The amount of water required in the summer would make
your baskets too wet early and late in the season.

Tim and Alan, I gave up on Hozelock hose fittings last year after
having three new connectors leak or come apart in use so I am very
wary of trying their irrigation stuff.

Chris, I have placed a small order of sufficient Tropf Blumat kit to
try on a couple of baskets - I like the concept and they do appear to
have quite good reviews.
