An established eleagnus on a north facing fence has died gradually

It is in a very sheltered position.
No idea why it has died, maybe lack of water.
Anyhow, a forsythia cutting seems to have taken, and I was
wondering whether this would serve as a replacement.
It would certainly give an injection of colour in a gloomyish
corner. Do they need a lot of direct sunlight?

Thanks

I have Forsythias in two quite different positions: one in good light,
but limited direct sun, the others on a roughly north-facing wall, in
the dappled shade of birch trees, so getting no direct sun. The one in
good light definitely has more flowers.

Gardening on Wilts/Somerset border
on slightly alkaline clay underlying soil worked for many decades.
