Garlic.
 

Is it me or is everyone now selling IOW garlic to plant. Our finding is it
simply does not grow well on our very acid soil but considering where it's
grown on chalk that is not surprising. The hunting around begins again!

It grew on my gardens clay, neutral pH soil for the first year but
that's it!

Don't know how they do it on the IOW but they do have a fair range. I read somewhere recently that some garlics have a soil preference and that you should find the one that suits your soil best. Also to find someone else in your area who also grows it. Swap bulbs for growing on every couple of years. I always choose the biggest cloves to grow on. My bulbs this year are not so good, but nothing had done particularly well in the garden

My aunt has an Indian gardener and he just plants his garlic in her garden,
does very well and lasts me all year.
He grows aubergines in her greenhouse.
He's pretty good, but prunes everything to death.

Talk of pruning to death, house opposite, which is rented out in rooms, had
a decent sized Wisteria across the front of the house, been there decades.
This week someone, probably the "gardeners" the owner employs (ten mins max
to do both front and back gardens!), has pruned it buy cutting it off at
about 6ft above the ground. Just the large trunk left standing.
