Default Peach Curl

Hi All,

I have a young peach tree which is suffering from what I assume is leaf curl
(leaves turning red with large warty growths) - is there anything I can do
at this stage or do I have to grin and bear it?

Thanks

Very little. Benomyl would help, but is forbidden to amateurs; it's
bad news for the female and fertile (i.e. it's teratogenic). All
you can do is to remove the red leaves and spray it with a copper-
based fungicide (e.g. Bordeaux mixture) - and spray again in the
autumn, after leaf fall, and sometime in the spring (I can't
remember when).

Regards,
Nick Maclaren.

Thanks Nick - is it likely to affect the blossom and not fruit?

I don't think that it will affect the blossom much, but the loss
of leaves may prevent it fruiting. I am no expert, though. My
peach is a peche de vigne, 15' high, and has to look after itself.
Being a semi-wild variety, it does fairly well. I did treat it
as I described when it was small.

The best solution is to build a sort of porch roof over the tree, if you
can keep the rain off it you can stop the problem

Rain? What &^(*!$ rain?! We've had only 20mm in the last month, with
nothing for over two weeks. In fact, there has been only 160mm since the
beginning of the year. It's been windy, too, so the soil has been losing
moisture quickly where there is no mulch.

I knew I shouldn't have put that new holly hedge in a couple of months
ago... :-(

That much eh! The last time it rained properly here was the 12th
March. We did have 1mm the other evening but that didn't actually even
wet the patio.
Thank goodness I put in a seep hose around our garden a couple of years
ago.
