How long a trimmer line lasts before having to be 'bumped' or in your
case replaced, depends very much on what you're strimming. For grass
and light weeds, 2mm should be OK, although using it up against any
solid barrier is asking for trouble.

You should approach the lawn edging, watching the area of cut grass
fall just in front of the strimmer head until that cut area just
reaches the lawn edging, at which point you move sideways along the
length of the edging. The line should not hammer away at the edging.

I doubt that the line sold for spool strimmers but of the same
diameter would make much difference, but a thicker line would,
assuming (a) you could feed it through the strimmer head, and (b) the
motor is powerful enough to spin the heavier line at a decent speed.
Thicker lines such as 2.4mm or 3mm are available. See also

But basically, don't hammer it against the lawn edging or anything
else solid!

Regarding the lawn eddging, try usingit backwards so thet the guard
comes up against the edge so protecting the line (Not wire).
