Lagerstroemia

Since seeing a pretty large one of these at Killerton a few years ago
I've always wanted to try growing one, but the cost has put me off.
Killerton is not that far from Exeter, so mildish - although 60m or so
above sea level. The tree there is around 50 years old, and subject to
frost, although protected from cold winds. Evidently it has been very
reluctant to flower.

At one of my local garden centres I just found several plants at 75%
off! I couldn't resist it so bought a Lagerstroemia indica 'Braise
d’été', which was showing some decent red flowers.

I think I'll keep it in a pot in the south-facing area where other
tender plants in pots grow (and a fig which has fruited well in the last
few weeks), and see how it gets on. Then, if we keep getting mild
winters, I'll put it in one of the beds and see if it survives.

Anyone growing Lagerstroemia outside and can offer any tips?
