New greenhouse -- what's a good make?
 

Hello all,

As the Subject says I'm think of renewing our greenhouse, which is long
past its best. It's bare aluminium, 8'x6', and was being thrown out by
our neighbour when we got it 15-20 years ago.

What is a good make? The choice is enormous! I don't want to spend a
fortune on any kind of "Gucci" job, but I'd like a high quality one. I
would assemble it myself.

It sounds mundane, perhaps, but would B&Q be a good place to start
looking? I'm after a 10'x6, and perhaps one of those nice-looking
(powder coated??) green ones would be nice.

I got a Halls 8 x 14 Magnum 7 years ago from South West Greenhouses. I
had excellent service from them. They erected it too. Mine was in plain
aluminium, but you can get it in green.

The greenhouse has been fine, standing up to strong winds without
problem. The only thing I would add is that toughened glass is essential
IMHO. Other extras are up to you.

The greenhouse has been fine, standing up to strong winds without
problem. The only thing I would add is that toughened glass is essential
IMHO. Other extras are up to you.

These are the people I have used, a great selection.
I got 2 of the basic 8 x 12 houses which I linked to make a 8 x 24 I
added extra braces and set them on single concrete block base with a 4x1
timber nailed on top of them to screw the house down to. so I have a
house with a door at each end, a fair number of vents which I fitted
with automatic vents to.

I'd be suspicious of a B&Q one. How much it costs depends on things like
how rigid it is (thickness of the aluminium frame), glass type and
mounting and the design of the doors and opening windows. Worth having a
look round garden centres with examples erected or online specialists.

If you buy a cheap one then replace the diagonal cross braces with a
thicker grade of aluminium L section or add extra ones. That is how mine
failed by the corner facing into the wind crippling and glass doesn't
bend (admittedly in hurricane force 100mph gusting winds).

I had an Eden greenhose for many years. It served me well.
It blew over in a violent storm (my fault for putting it where I did).
They were able to supply the correct broken glass panels and metal bits and
nuts and bolts. Glad I insured it as an add-on to the house insurance.
Eventually sold it locally when I moved. It came to bits easily.

surface protecting the rest of the metal.

You may have to watch that any powder coated item isn't steel.

In my experience powder coating is often like a plastic layer that
sometimes doesn't fully bond to the item it covers. After a few years
hairline cracks appear and water gets in under the coating. At best it
causes the coating to flake off and at worst it traps water so if it's
covering steel it rusts beneath the coating.

Thanks for those response chaps - useful. And yes Alan -- that thought
had crossed my own mind, about the pretty powder coating: you have
reinforced it nicely.


But: no rush! (You'll like this) This was to be a 70th birthday
present for my wife. When I broached the subject yesterday she told me,
a little frostily, that it's *next* December, not this, that she reaches
that splendid age! 8-O

I have a 10ft x 8ft "Rhino" greenhouse. When erecting it I had half glazed the panels when a storm blew up. The wind hit 70MPH and blew the greenhouse off its plinth. Ddespite this, not a single pane of glass broke! The glass is toughened and the frame is strong & well braced. I have had this greenhouse bolted down to a concrete plinth for almost ten years now and the only problem I had was one winter when I had forgotten to remove the auto-openers on the windows and bolt them down for the winter storms (I live in the far north of Scotland). A full near-hurricane force wind got in underneath the window. It ripped one of the windows up and over the ridge, bending the ridge and shattering the glass in the window. I had to replace the ridge and window but spares are available and within a week it was up and running once again. Some cheaper greenhouses are flimsy and you cannot buy spare parts if they get damaged. I wholeheartedly recommend RHINO as a greenhouse make. They are not cheap but as they rightly say: "You get what you pay for."
