Default Dianthus Rockin red brown leaves

I have had this plant for what is now the 2nd year and although I have
been feeding it during its' flowering time, the lower leaves are all
brown. It's like they are either dead or dying off, but the flowers are
still in full bloom. I noticed this last year as well, but I wasn't
feeding it then.

What am I doing wrong,if anything.

I moved the said plant into a pot with just some general purpose compost,
and now there are more flowers and green leaves on the stalks. There are
still some brown bits yet on on the stalks, but the plant is looking a
bit better / healthier.
