Please ... any good, safe ideas on how I can discourage the fox from
using a particular area of the garden as a toilet ? The dear animal is
quite horribly prolific in its activities ...

One and a quarter ouces of BB-size lead shot travelling at 1400 ft/sec
seems to do the trick for me. are you anywhere S Leics? I'd be happy

There is a product called Renardine available at garden centres which I
have used before to deter foxes from maintaining a latrine. It smells
somewhat disgusting - put a short cane in the ground by the latrine, tie
a rag to it about 30/40cm from the ground and soak it with the
Renardine.

Good - thanks That's the sort of thing I was looking for. I see the
National Fox Welfare Society recommend mixing it with sharp sand &
scattering that around the areas you need to keep them away from ...
don't know if that would be more effective than the rag soaking or not.
Anyway, I'll give it a go.

The other suggestions I have heard, though have no evidence that it works is
human urine, supposedly pungent enough to keep most foxes away.

you could try placing some cut thorny twigs in the affected area. I do this
all the time to keep the cats of the veg plot. I use holly, rose, bramble
etc and just loosely place it on the ground with a rock or two to stop in
being moved.
You could also put some stakes in the ground every 6-8" around the area and
tie some string between them and across the whole area.

Funnily enough, I was given the same advice for keeping cats away just this
Sunday (by a retired lady at the allotments, who was rather embarassed at
discussing this topic with a young (to her, at least !) man). However, she
did suggest that only male urine did the job - something to do with
pheromones used for marking out your territory? Dunno, but I'm not sure I'm
desperate enough to try weeing all over the back fence just yet ;-)

Foxes usually prefer a raised stone or log to deposit it on; they are
marking territory. I suggest you re-mark the territory as not-for-foxes,
either with your own urine and a watering can, or borrow some dog poohs.
Even just hanging a well-worn shirt nearby might be enough of a
deterrent.

Janet.

It may well come to that ...

.... I've just put Renardine soaked rags all round the area. And to my
horror found that was the whole can used up, & at over 8 quid a go
that's not very attractive - especially as it's recommended to reapply
*every* time it rains, which on current form would come to a rough
estimate of 60 quid a week. What with this & the slug control, I'm
beginning to wonder how cost effective home grown organic vegetables
really are ...

That's interesting, I've used the rag soak method and it is effective, but
the
other way might be worth a try.

Er ... you mean you'd give them back afterwards? :-)

Ermm - after six months of trying all forms of cat repellent (who seem to do
their stuff on my lawn rather than borders and bury it - we don't have a cat
and there is a large cat population on our estate), and out of pure
financial exasperation I tried the Human Urine 'marking my territory' bit.

It works very well ! Repeat every fort night (I collect mine in a milk
bottle in the down stairs toilet and then sprinkle it over the lawn and
fence posts after dark !!). The cats get the message.

Sorry for those eating their tea whilst reading this post !!
