Default Automatic watering systems.

Anyone using automatic watering systems for their greenhouses? I only know
of a "hydromat" and Juliana has invented sort of a drip system, with long
tubes you put everywhere in your greenhouse.

But can't you just put a big barrel of water in your greenhouse, and rely on
evaporation-humidity to do the job?

The problem with an automatic system from a water butt has an unreliable
source of water. Hozelock and Gardena do automatic watering systems from an
outside tap (a kit to inside £25 approx) The whole system will cost around
£100 There are starter packs are available to bring down the cost. The
system, once probably up and running can be used while you are away on
holiday. I would advise that you set it up well in advance of going away
though. The systems are much easier to install than you think. Full
instructions are given. Customers whom I have sold them to have told me
that they are simple to install and very good.

Personally I prefer the Gardena system. Its easier to install and change
around and its more versatile.
If you are interested I'm sure your local garden centre can advise.

The tubes and connectors etc are a lot cheaper at N A Kays Horticulture
(Mail Order).
Recently helped a young lady install a system around her walled garden as
she was going away on contract for 3 months min. Kays was less than half the
price of the local GC.
You will need a water computer to run the system though.

I've used both in my garden, but I am less than impressed. The plastic bits
are quite vulnerable and a good frost usually ends up with several breaking.
They may, of course, fare better inside a greenhouse.

Last year I gave up rebuilding the system at the start of each season. I
plan to bring back from France a number of pop-up watering sprays that screw
onto connectors for standard 25mm underground water pipe on my next trip.
They are on sale in my local garden centre there.

What's a water computer doing?

Sounds simple..

I'd like to water my greenhouse using my rainwater barrel. But for that I
picture I need this setup:

A water pump connected to the barrel
A water computer connected to the pump
An automatic water system connected to the water computer.

But how does the pump and water computer work together? The pump just wanna
go all the time? or maybe I can get them combined.

And I thought that was a Tap.

You could make up a system with a solenoid valve to control the flow of
water and link it to a 24 hour plug in time clock (I bought 3 timers for
around £10.00)

That sounds good. Where do you get the solenoid valves from?
Does it run on 12 volts or what?

If you have a pump, best to use a mains timer - not a water computer.
Search for "mains timer" on ebay.

If you use a rainwater barrel, better use a filter - or drippers with big
holes in - or they'll get all gunked up.
