Garden clearance question
Hi folks,
Please forgive what is a fairly basic question from someone who doesn't exactly do a lot of gardening. I want to clear one of my garden borders to make my patio area bigger. In order to do this I need to: - dig up and dispose of the plants that are currently there (nothing that I particularly want to keep) - remove the soil from the bed - break up and dispose of the concrete edging around the bed The first bit isn't a problem. The local council will provide bages to dispose of plant waste. However, they have stated that they won't take soil or building materials. I have a friend who can provide me tools to break up the edging. My only problem is how to dispose of the concrete and soil. I've trawled DIY shops for clues but with no success. Any ideas? The volume of soil is not huge - the bed is about 10 feet x 2 feet max. Thanks in anticipation. Martin |

You'll probably have to pay through the nose for something no better. Rod |

Garden clearance question
Martin,
Doesn't your local council have a waste disposal site to which you can take the concrete? Regarding the top soil, think about using it elsewhere or put an advert in the local freebie paper - someone is bound to want it if it's free. Ron |

If you turn up in a car with your waste bagged, then you won't be charged. Small trailers ok too - just make sure it doesn't look anything like "trade". Turn up in a van or pickup and the Tip Mafia will get all shirty and think you're trade trying to avoid landfill taxes and encourage you to pay lots of money at the trade site. -- Simon Avery, Dartmoor, UK Ý http://www.digdilem.org/ |

Garden clearance question
The message
from Rick McGreal contains these words: As to the soil.....Ask about....Maybe one of your neighbours could use it? They may even take it away themselves.... Try a sign at the gate; free topsoil, hardcore, and plants/compost material. First come first served, bring your own barrow or bags. Janet. |
