Default Potatoes - That Eureka Moment!

I have to share this with my fellow urglers. About an hour ago, I dug
up my first set of potatoes, ever. The joy was indescribable. Just
amazing. I've eaten some of the ones I pulled up from one plant which
yielded about 10 potatoes. The texture was wonderful and they had a
real earthy, old fashioned taste. Wow.

Yummmm, home grown potatoes. I've only just moved to a house with a garden
large enough to plant a few rows of full sized potatoes, but used to grow
Anya potatoes at the last house with huge success. Just keep a few wrapped
in newspaper at the bottom of the fridge when you've bought your last packet
from Sainsbury in October. They keep reasonably well, and plant them in
spring. They are a very expensive potato, but I don't know why because they
produce a monster crop which tastes even better than the originals, thanks
to growing them organically.

Like you say, that earthy taste and much crunchier texture is wonderful.

Congratulations on being happy

yourself?! B-)

Well they do..all that sweat makes them taste wonderful :-). But also,
you're tasting really fresh, natural vegetables the way they are meant
to be, a completely different experience from eating shop veg... which
have been grown for uniformity and stamina, then put through an assault
course; machine picked, transported, sorted, washed, dried, sprayed,
packed, transported some more, bunged on the shelves, into a trolley,
through a checkout, and into and out of the car boot.

Just wait till you taste your own strawberries or tomatoes just picked
and still warm from the sun; or lettuce that was growing until five
minutes earlier; or peas so sweet and tender they really don't need
cooking, or sweetcorn that wasn't picked until the water came to the
boil, or raw onions that drip juice, or....

Just wait :-)

Sheesh....After all that I wouldn't be suprised to find they were all
bruised (Although that would explain a lot!)

I'm doing both...Unfortunatly my daughter has had all the strawberies so
far....Ok there has only been about 6 actual berries!

Dang....Now I'm hungry again!

They certainly taste better than shop bought even when a friend's dad has
grown them rather than yourself ;-) Said friend's kids had raided grandad's
allotment on the way down to us, so arrived burdened with wonderful
potatoes, and what was for me a new experience, freshly picked garlic. I'd
had home grown spuds before, but the garlic is something else...

Wait till you try peas. I`ve had em from Tesco`s and never thought
they tasted as good as when I used to crawl over to next doors and
pick em off the plant. Ok I`d read about how frozen peas are done in
an hour from picking to frozen but why I never understood.

THEN, I got into veggie gardening and read about the sugers turning to
starch in peas and sweetcorn (another fave of mine).

I`ve not managed to get any peas in this year but next year I`m gonna
have a bed down the allotment all to myself and I can guarentee that
not ONE pod will get 5 mins down the road to the house.

I can almost taste em!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweetcorn I do have a few in so I`ll be cutting and then biking down
the road to a boiling pan of water

I`m trying some garlic from some old cloves I had so I`ll give that a
whirl sometime too.

And here's another eureka!
Just dug first two plants of international kidney, just under a lb in
weight of spuds and a very chuffed jane. Took one of them and boiled it in
a pan with a shop-bought Jersey and blind-taste tested them on the SO. He
said very similar but liked mine better!
(I think shop Jerseys are a bit bland this year for some reason)

And these are only the first two plants. With luck and some rain there's
going to be lots more YUM!

(what was even more amazing was the eight-ball courgette I also picked -
the plant doesn't look big enough but still managed to grow my first of the
season and it's only June)

Here's looking at a wonderful summer
