Plant identification needed and a few questions!
 

Hi all,

I wonder if someone could identify the white plant in these 2 pictures for me:

The pictures are DSC01589 and DSC01591.

I have noticed that they seem to cling to items very well and I was wondering if they
would thrive or at least be okay in a shaded, semi-indoor environment?

Also, if I took a cutting, do they root well?

Any info (or additional info) will be greatly welcomed.

They look like a white Morning Glory Even a bit like bindweed or some other
sort of convulvula

I'm afraid I am a bit of a novice here. Do you happen to know if it is a 'weed' or
actually a plant that people grow purposely?

Also, do you know if it would grow in a shaded area?

Looks like bindweed to me. You can keep it if you want, best way really
because you'll have a heck of a job getting rid of it

actually a plant that people grow purposely?

Don't apologise for your lack of knowledge...we all had to start at the
beginning ;-)

The common name Bindweed is a true description of this plant. It twines
round anything it can and tends to strangle it. Therefore it is normally
treated as a weed, although it is pretty when it is in flower ;-)

Also, do you know if it would grow in a shaded area?

It will grow anywhere!

Yes, probably Hedge Bindweed ( Bellbine ). People usually rip them
out rather than trying to propagate them - they throttle other plants. I
have a feeling they do best in sun, but who knows? They'll certainly
grow in the shade, whether they flower profusely is another thing.

Thanks for the reply Natalie,

The location of this plant would be on my landing which is a private apartment block.
There are no other plants for it to 'strangle'. I liked the flowers and was hoping that it
would grow wild in the north-facing shaded area that I may put it in.

It would be planted in a long trough kind of pot against a wall with no direct sun...
probably with wires for it to cling to.

Do you think it would flower in constant shade (albeit quite a bright area) and will it
look okay in the winter; will the leaves wither and die or will they still look fairly
attractive?

Most people call it a weed and it will tend to strangle other plants,
but if you like it ............:~))

My neighbour across the roads loves dandelions and is always most put
out when I weed them out of my front garden......:~))

Hi, I have seen a similar flower and vine leaved plant for sale in B&Q,
being sold as a "Russian Vine" which I believe are known also as "A Mile a
Minute"

But I hasten to add, I agree with the most popular identification, that of
bindweed (Convovulvus) despite its beautiful flower, it does have a tendancy
to "throttle" other plants.

Nope, not russian vine, leaves are smaller, flowers are smaller dangly and
fluffy and a lot more insignificant.
