lychnis chalcedonia/coronaria - difference?
 

Hi

Just been browsing the Thompson&Morgan seed catalogue, looking for
lychnis coronaria which I love and would like to try growing in my
garden but their seed list also includes lychnis chalcedonia which
sounds almost identical - anyone know what the difference is and which
would be easier to grow?

L. coronaria has single pink blooms on the end of each stalk but L. chalcedonica
has bright scarlet blooms in dense flattened heads 3 - 5 inches across.

I think this is the right way round ...

L chalcedonica is the maltese cross - incredibly bright red flowers, not
as large as L coronaria but with just as much impact by reason of their
garishness, green foliage, petals with a notch (hence the maltese cross
name)

L coronaria has grey foliage and comes in two colours, puce which I
hate, and white.

Both are very easy from seed.

L chalcedonica may be more tolerant of soggy wet soil.
