hi

we have finally got round to tackling the back garden but do not know the
first thing about designing, plants etc. we do not have too much cash to
spare since we have just renovated the house. we were wondering if there
was anyone that can recommend someone who can design gardens etc but not
cost too much. thanks. feung

I suspect that most designers will cost more than you probably want to
pay, but maybe you could try a local horticultural college - maybe
some of the students could use you as a guinea pig ?

I've got some design sites on my home page in case you want to have a
go yourself:

Cambridge is not my area so I'm not touting for the business.....

Cost for survey and concept design in the region of £4/500 for a "normal"
designer more for a Name- Andy Sturgeon quotes from £1000 on his web site.

Alternatively, around £100/150 would buy you an on site consultancy visit

If budget does not stretch to that try any Garden Design courses that run
locally - you may find someone willing to do it for the experience and
nominal fee.

FWIW my advice would be to get a design for the whole garden but plan to
implement it piecemeal - do the easy bits yourself and get someone in to do
the heavy &/or skilled stuff.

Try contacting Impington Village College (just North of Cambridge)
They ran a garden design course last year, two terms September to
Easter. I did it and it was well worth it. First term was largely
layout and second more orientated towards plant selection. Hills Road
Sixth Form College were advertising a course as well.
